DOGS-HEROES OF UKRAINE 2023
1. German Shepherd Jess
Jess the dog and Oleksandr Vovk, a dog handler of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.
This pair is actively involved in clearing rubble after Russian attacks on residential buildings of peaceful Ukrainians. Thanks to their keen sense of smell and endurance, their help is invaluable in the ruins, where there is always hope for life. Jess and Oleksandr have saved lives at facilities in Romen and Dnipropetrovsk regions, helped in eliminating the consequences of an earthquake in Turkey and others.
2. Belgian Shepherd Malinois Li
Dog Li and dog handler Oleksii of the National Guard of Ukraine, call sign Tykhon.
Li took part in combat missions in Kyiv and Kyiv region, Kharkiv and the region. Awarded the medal "For devoted service of the 2nd and 3rd degrees".
One of the tasks was to assist in the detection of dangerous objects and the detention of offenders, including at checkpoints.
3. Belgian Shepherd Malinois Irvin
Dog Irvin and dog handler with the call sign Chak of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU).
Service dogs of the SSU are able to search for explosives, as well as find and detain intruders. Their motto: "Always in defense of state sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state! Life - for the Motherland, honor - for no one!"
4. Belgian Shepherd Malinois Oss
Dog Oss and dog handler Stepan from the Command of the Armed Forces Support Forces of Ukraine.
This pair has gained significant combat experience while performing missions in Donetsk region for a long period, starting in May 2021. During the performance of combat missions, more than a dozen mines and other explosive objects were discovered.
5. Belgian Shepherd Malinois Odin
Dog Odin with the dog handler of the National Guard of Ukraine Maksym, call sign Siman.
Odin has extensive combat experience. Together with his previous owner, it was a participant in the tragic events at Azovstal. It was awarded the medal "For Dedicated Service, 1st degree". It is currently working on the search for explosives, weapons and ammunition in the east of the country. For its participation in the Joint Forces Operation in Mariupol, Odin received the medal "For Dedicated Service, 2nd and 3rd degrees". It worked in Kharkiv and the region after the full-scale invasion.
6. Belgian Shepherd Malinois Ayid
Malinois Ayid, together with Sergeant Bohdan Panin, call sign Ayid from the 26th Artillery Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Reconnaissance of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, use drones to search for targets, identify their exact coordinates for further aiming and work on the enemy with a cannon. During the launch of the device, the four-legged Ayid works to protect the perimeter and warn of danger, if necessary. Despite this, he constantly warns his comrades about approaching missiles or drones.
7. Belgian Shepherd Malinois Kate
Dog Kate and dog handler Vitalii Lytvyn - police captain, deputy head of the Canine Center of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv.
Special dog Kate works in the direction of searching for explosives and weapons in Kyiv, was involved in conducting authorized searches in public places, schools and kindergartens. This pair is part of the anonymous mine response group, is involved in duty at the central railway station and in other operational and search activities. Also, as part of the explosives teams, Kate and Vitalii were in Kherson region to repel the armed aggression of Russia and for operational demining of the city of Kherson and the region.
8. German Shepherd Brad
The cynology pair of the State Security Administration is on guard for the safety of persons under state protection.
The dog Brad and its handler perform an important mission to protect officials and foreign delegations.
9. German Shepherd Zorro
Dog Zorro and a dog handler of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine with the call sign Cat.
With the beginning of a full-scale war, they participated in the de-occupation of Kyiv and the Kyiv region. During this time, many explosive devices were discovered and several saboteurs were detained. They were also involved in conducting special operations throughout the country.
10. American Cocker Spaniels Sonya and Jesse
Alina Panina, a dog handler for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, spent 5 months in Russian captivity. She got there while in Mariupol, along with her husband and service dogs Sonya and Jessie. The Ukrainian woman divided her food ration into three - for herself and two dogs. Alina managed to be freed from captivity. The dogs were not returned to her.
In the "Dogs-Heroes of Ukraine" project, Sonya and Jesse became a symbol of all animals captured by the invaders.
11. Belgian Shepherd Malinois Odin
A service dog named Odin and a dog handler with the call sign Junker from the Rapid Operational Response Unit (KORD).
This dog has 15 detained offenders during a full-scale invasion.
12. Golden Retriever Nora
Golden Retriever named Nora with the owner Nadiia Torchuk.
Nadiia is a canine therapist, and Nora is a therapy dog, a specialist in the animal world. Canine therapy is one of the effective methods of treatment, as well as medical and social rehabilitation with the help of specially trained dogs.
This couple is part of the volunteer group DOG HELPS to LIVE, which helps many adults and children, and during the war pays special attention to the treatment and rehabilitation of Ukrainian soldiers.
